Dear AAFEPA Members,
Welcome to the Alabama Association of
Federal Education Program Administrators’
website. Please tour the site to obtain
information ranging from Alabama to
Washington DC.
During the recent 2010
NAFEPA Conference in Washington DC, Alabama
was well represented with many of you
participating. A very special thank you to
Dr. Deann Stone and many of the staff from
the Federal Programs Section of the SDE for
attending the conference. This was an
additional sign of the wonderful partnership
we share in Alabama between the LEAs and the
SDE leaders. Conference presentations were
focused on reauthorization. NAFEPA partners,
Brustein & Manasevit and Thompson Publishing
were once again represented on the program.
Leigh Manasevit provided a very insightful
presentation on Wednesday, and Thompson
Publishing provided the first 300 conference
attendees with the recently revised edition
of The New Title I: The Changing Landscape
of Accountability and a special printing of
the EDGAR resource book. There were many
other excellent presentations from varying
viewpoints.
On Wednesday afternoon, March
31, NAFEPA officers Debra Baros, Bobby
Burns, Terry Larsen and Rick Carder
represented NAFEPA in a meeting with
Assistant Secretary of Education Thelma
Melendez de Santa Ana, Deputy Assistant
Secretary Carl Harris, Deputy General
Counsel Phil Rosenfelt, and Special
Assistant Steven Means from the Office of
Elementary and Secondary Education.
Discussion focused around involving NAFEPA
in the ESEA reauthorization process. This
was outstanding news!
You should all be
making plans to attend the 2010 AAFEPA
Conference. It will once again be held in
Perdido Beach. The dates are November 3 – 5,
2010. Jayne Davis, AAFEPA Conference
Chairperson, is working to bring some of the
NAFEPA presenters to the 2010 AAFEPA Fall
Conference. You will not want to miss it.
It is a critical time for federal programs
as we are facing reauthorization. Attendance
at the conference is the best way to get the
latest news and to build relationships with
your colleagues. Stay tuned and stay
informed as reauthorization moves forward
during the coming months.
Warmest regards,
Karen C. Calvert
AAFEPA President
